Spring Break Screen Printing Series
Create something real. Learn a craft you can return to again and again.
This three-part screen printing series invites young people (ages 14–25) into the magical barn at Sunny Joy Farm to slow down, make art by hand, and learn a powerful creative skill from start to finish.
Over the course of three long-form studio sessions, participants will design, prepare, and print their own original work—walking away with 5–10 finished prints and a deep understanding of the screen printing process. This is a supportive, hands-on learning environment where curiosity is welcome, experimentation is encouraged, and youth are trusted as artists.
Class One: Image & Idea Making
We explore different ways to create artwork for screen printing—drawing, collage, text, and adapting existing designs. This session is about finding your visual voice and translating ideas into printable form.Class Two: Making the Screen
Participants learn the photo emulsion process and create their own silk screens. This is where art meets technique and the magic really begins.Class Three: Printing for Success
We focus on printing techniques, problem-solving, layering, and repetition—skills that support confidence, quality, and creative independence.
Each class is 3.5 hours, allowing time to settle in, ask questions, and truly learn by doing.
All screen printing materials are provided. Participants may bring their own garments if they’d like to print on clothing.
This class is especially well-suited for:
Youth and young adults (14–25)
Parent/child or intergenerational pairs
Beginners and experienced makers alike

Learn to hammer print on cotton with flowers and leaves and go home with a versatile bandana. You'll be provided with a bandana that has been pre-mordanted to make the botanical prints permanent. Naturally print with sulphur cosmos, dyer’s coreopsis, indigo and pincushion flowers from my garden. We will be using the Japanese printmaking technique, Hapa Zome. Flower and leaf pigments are transferred to the cloth by hammering, leaving a detailed permanent print. You will finish the workshop with your own 22”x22” cotton bandana that can be worn as a head scarf, neck scarf or face covering.
