Backyard Chickens 101 - Mar 15
Backyard Chickens 101
A hands-on class for teens (or any beginner) who want to raise chickens with confidence
Thinking about raising chickens but don’t know where to start?
Wondering if it’s even allowed where you live, how much work it really is, or how to keep chickens safe and healthy?
This class is for teens who want real answers—and real skills.
At Sunny Joy Farm, you’ll learn what it actually takes to raise backyard chickens responsibly, from setting up a coop to handling birds safely, caring for them through the seasons, and understanding whether chickens make sense for your life and budget.
This isn’t just theory. We’ll walk through a working chicken setup, talk honestly about challenges, and share what works (and what doesn’t).
What you’ll learn:
Where chickens are and aren’t allowed (city & rural rules)
How to choose the right breed for your goals
Coop design, placement, and whether to build or buy
Chicken anatomy and how to handle birds calmly and safely
Where to get chicks and how to care for them when they’re young
Feeding, watering, and daily care routines
How to keep chickens safe from predators
Managing common issues like lice and mites
Winter care and year-round health
Eggs: what to expect, how many, and when
The real economics of raising chickens (costs vs. benefits)
You’ll also receive take-home handouts so you can keep learning and planning after the class.
