I grow madder root on my urban homestead as artisans have for thousands of years. Madder is a root that takes 3 years to grow to a usable size that can then be dug up, washed and made into a cool dye bath to produce colors ranging from blushy peaches and pinks to brilliant reds or purple’s depending on the ph of the dye bath.

My naturally dyed garments go through more than 5 processes from start to finish. I grow many of the flowers and plants that I use for dye. The fabric preparation process takes 3 steps and then there is the dyeing itself. Naturally dyed garments catch the light exquisitely and it is normal for the colors to change a little over time. I only use plants, minerals and insect dyes that have proven to be lightfast and as permanent as natural dyes can be. Expect variation in color concentration as a feature from the earth artisan garments. Each item is truly one of a kind and cannot be duplicated.

The colors of naturally dyed garments hold up best if you hand wash them and hang them to dry, however machine washing on a gentle cycle in cool water is fine too, taking care to use gentle all natural cleansers (or none at all)
