In this 3 part series you will have the opportunity to complete an entire screen printing project of your choosing. The first class explores various methods to make art or prepare your existing art for screen printing. In class two, we will learn how to create silk screens using the photo emulsion process. Class three will introduce you to the art of printing for success. You will be able to complete a project of your own with up to 5-10 printed items.

We will be using plastic waste as forms for creating small plant pots with a mixture of peat moss or paper pulp, Portland cement, and sand or vermiculite. Natural elements such as moss, sticks, mushrooms, and dried flowers can embellish the forms.

Learn how to transfer plants to paper using steam. We will bundle up 2 batches of paper bundles with an array of botanicals from my abundant garden. The two sets will be mordanted with 2 different mordants to achieve 2 different color palettes. You will go home with your finished botanical papers and a list of plants of Southern Oregon that print well.

Learn the basics of dying fabric with natural plant and insect based dyes. You will learn how to mordant your garments for good adherence of color, how to prepare a dye vat with cochineal and madder for the colors in the range of red to purple. You will be provided with a silk scarf to dye in the class and have an option to bring something from home to dye as well.

In this 3 hour fiber art course you will learn the art of printing on silk with plants. You will be provided a pre-mordanted ready to print scarf and tannin-rich leaves. In the class, we will design, layout & wrap up your project 3-5pm and take a dinner break while your project steams, then unveil 7-8pm.

We will be experimenting with multiple projects using plaster of paris such as 3D watercolor, botanical sculpture, and relief printing.


Eco-Art Open Studios with Sunny are an opportunity to enjoy a brief lesson on a particular medium and have ample time to just play in the studio. Each session will start with a demonstration followed by open studio time to work on your project. All materials are provided for a simple project to practice the medium. For folks who want to go further, additional materials will be available for purchase. These events are designed to introduce participants to various forms of Eco-Art, supplement bigger workshop offerings.

Learn the basics of dying yarn with and indigo vat and a scarf with fresh leaf indigo. Fresh Leaf Indigo Dyeing

Harvest fresh leaf indigo from my garden and using only salt and the juices from the leaves, dye a silk satin handkerchief a lovely teal green. When dyeing with indigo on silk fibers, no mordant is necessary. Leaves are simply macerated with salt and the pigments transfer to the silk like magic. You will finish the workshop with your own 17”x17” silk satin hanky that can be worn as a scarf or a head wrap.

Hapa Zome Leaf & Flower Prints

Harvest sulphur cosmos, dyer’s coreopsis, indigo and pincushion flowers from my garden and print their floral signature onto a cotton handkerchief. We will be using the Japanese printmaking technique, Hapa Zome. Flower and leaf pigments are transferred to the cloth by hammering, leaving a detailed permanent print when your cloth is pre-mordanted. You will finish the workshop with your own 22”x22” cotton hanky that can be worn as a head scarf, neck scarf or face covering.

Pre-mordanted hanky included in class fee.

Come explore fungi dye! We will extract color from 2 common local area dye mushrooms, producing the colors orange/red, grey/purple or dark olive. You will take home 1 mushroom dyed silk scarf, 1 skein of mushroom dyed yarn, and recipes to carry on your own experiments!

Raising Chickens

Want to raise chickens this year, but you're not sure where to start? You probably have a lot of questions like: Can I have them in the city? How do I make sure they are friendly? How do I keep them healthy and protect them from predators? Does it make economic sense?

This class is designed to answer all of your questions and get you on the road to chicken raising success.

In this course we will cover all of these topics and more! Plus a tour of my chicken setup.

Expect to learn all about chickens and the law, building or buying a coop, coop location and design, choosing a breed, chicken anatomy & how to handle a chicken, where to buy chicks, brooding chicks, chicken training, chicken feeding, chicken watering, protecting from predators, managing lice and mites, winter chicken care, all about eggs, chicken economics.

The class will be held at Sunny Joy Farm in South Ashland and will include a tour of my chicken setup. You will receive handouts with information you will need to get started with the joy of raising backyard chickens. 

*Not covered in this workshop are hatching chicks from eggs & treating serious chicken ailments.

This 12 week program is designed to prepare you to launch your original art t-shirt business. The program will cover everything you need to know to start your screen printing business including making a creative business plan, setting up your studio, designing products that will sell , sourcing raw materials, screen printing for success, efficient production strategies, artisan marketing in person and online and simplified business finance.

You will benefit from 18 hours of classroom instruction and business planning with a suite of business and creative resources to take away including business printables, creative instructional videos, and all the screen printing business insider connections you need to be successful. You will also have 18 hours of creative time, in studio, practicing and refining the art of screen printing. Upon completion of this program you’ll be ready to take your idea from launching your first product to acquiring wholesale accounts and you’ll have a clear roadmap to get there.

In the first class, we used plastic waste as forms for creating small plant pots with a mixture of peat moss or paper pulp, Portland cement, and sand or vermiculite. In class number 2, we will add additional embellishments to the pots using pressed flowers, watercolors, and two different types of washes.
